Dr. Sumanta Chakrabarti completed his Graduation in Civil Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Agartala (erstwhile Tripura Engineering College) securing First Class in 1993. He obtained another professional degree in Bachelor of Law from Tripura Govt. Law College under Tripura University in 1998. Dr. Chakrabarti completed Post-Graduate Level Course on Environmental Management from the Institute for Development, Policy & Management (IDPM), University of Manchester, United Kingdom in 2002 and PhD in Environmental Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani in 2015.
Dr. Chakrabarti is the recipient of prestigious Chevening Scholarship of United Kingdom during 2002 and Fullbright Fellowship of United States of America in 2010.
Dr. Chakrabarti worked in different capacities in the Government of Tripura -Environmental Engineer in the Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) under Department of Science, Technology & Environment (DSTE), Government of Tripura and as Project Director of Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) under Department of Science, Technology & Environment, Government of Tripura. He had more than 16 years working experience in the field of Environment, Pollution Control and Abatement, Environmental Regulations, Renewable Energy, Science & Technology etc.
Dr. Chakrabarti worked as Deputy Registrar and Registrar In-Charge of NIT Agartala and NIT Manipur. Presently Dr. Chakrabarti is working as Registrar of MBB University. He is having more than 13 years of working experience in Academic Administration of NITs and University. Dr. Chakrabarti completed 4 (Four) World Bank Funded Projects during 1996-2002 on Environmental Planning in Tripura and executed many projectsfunded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF). He worked as Environment Specialist for Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded Urban Development projects in Tripura. Dr. Chakrabarti was responsible for implementation of Solid Waste Management in Agartala Municipal Corporation and other Urban Local Bodies and implementation of Hospital Waste Management in the Health Care Establishments of Tripura as well.
Dr. Chakrabarti published 11 papers in International and National journals of repute and presented 12 papers in National and International Conference. He also guided four M.Tech students of Environmental Engineering Department of NIT Agartala for their M.Tech projects. Dr. Chakrabarti was awarded with the British Chevening Scholarship for Young Indian Environmental Managers 2002 in the Institute for Development Policy & Management, University of Manchester, United Kingdom, by the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), International Visitors Leadership Programme by Department of States, United States of America on Urban Environmental Issues during 2005, Fulbright Fellowship in 2010 by the Department of States, United States of America. During his Fullbright Fellowship period, he worked in United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). He was also awarded with the "Engineer of The Year" by the Institution of Engineers (India), Tripura State Centre in 2019 for his outstanding contribution to the advancement of Engineering Science & Technology and dedicated service rendered to the people of Tripura.
Dr. Chakrabarti is Fellow, The Institution of Engineers (India), Life Member, Indian Building Congress, Member, Indian Association for Air Pollution Control and Life Member, Indian Red Cross Society.
